Cancer Season and the New Moon: A Time to Feel Deeply, Begin Again, and Come Home to Yourself
The Sun has entered the astrological sign of Cancer — a time of year that invites us to soften, to care, and to return to what really matters.
Beginning on June 20 and lasting through July 22, Cancer season marks the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. It kicks off with the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year — a turning point that sheds light and warmth on the tenderness of our inner world.
The Symbol and Energy of Cancer
Cancer is a cardinal water sign, ruled by the Moon. As the first water sign of the zodiac, it initiates new beginnings and fresh starts — especially around home, belonging, safety, ancestral roots, and emotional wellbeing.
Symbolized by the crab, Cancer season teaches us the power of having a soft interior and a strong shell. We can protect what we love while remaining sensitive to our raw feelings and experiences.
Whether you’re comfortable with emotions or not, Cancer season brings them to the surface — not to overwhelm you, but to guide you. This can be an incredibly healing season, if you’re willing to lean into the wisdom of your emotions and the tender parts of you that are often hidden.
The New Moon in Cancer
A New Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon come together in the same zodiac sign, marking the beginning of a new lunar cycle and a fertile time to set intentions for the season ahead. Energetically, it's a time to turn inward, reflect, and get clear on what you want to grow. Occurring June 25 at 3:31am PT, the New Moon in Cancer invites us to explore themes of:
Emotional honesty — What are you really feeling beneath the surface?
Protection — What (or who) in your life is worth fiercely protecting — and how can you show that through care, not control?
Home and belonging — Cancer invites you to create spaces that feel safe and sacred. Where do you feel safest to be your full self?
Nurturing care — What kind of care are you craving right now — rest, softness, encouragement, presence? How can you offer it to yourself?
Ancestral healing — Cancer connects us to lineage and roots. What needs tending in your family story?
Around the New Moon, or anytime throughout Cancer season, choose one or two of the above reflections to journal on. Let your writing be a space where you’re allowed to feel it all. Cancer season is a reminder that our emotions aren’t problems to fix, they’re messengers to honor.
A Simple Water Ritual for Emotional Clarity + Renewal
Since Cancer is a water sign, connecting with water is a beautiful way to regulate and restore your energy. This ritual is a gentle way to connect with your emotional body and set intentions during the New Moon or anytime during Cancer season.
You’ll need:
A bowl of water, access to a bath/shower, or a faucet for washing your hands
A quiet space
Steps:
Sit with your water. Take a few deep breaths and imagine your worries, stuck emotions, or heaviness moving into the water.
Say aloud or in your heart:
“I release what no longer nourishes me and call in what does. I honor what I feel. I am safe to come home to myself.”
Dip your fingers in the water, splash your face, simply let the water run over your body if you're in the shower, or your hands if you’re using a sink. Visualize it rinsing away what has served its purpose and replenishing your energy, from the inside out.
End by wrapping yourself in something soft, drinking water, or repeating these affirmations.
I honor the wisdom of my emotions.
I am allowed to feel deeply and still be safe.
My sensitivity is a strength, not a weakness.
I protect what matters to me with love and clarity.
I create space to rest, to feel, to simply be.
Cancer season is a time to soften — not because you’re weak, but because softness is strength. In a world that often rewards detachment, Cancer teaches us to care deeply, to hold close what matters, and to feel our way home.
