5 Challenges Modern Moms Face (and Why You’re Not Alone)

Note: This post touches on gun violence and school shootings. Please read with care.

Motherhood has never been simple, but raising kids in today’s world comes with unique challenges that past generations couldn’t have imagined. Moms today are navigating pressures and realities that shape not only our daily routines but also our children’s sense of safety, belonging, and wellbeing.

Here are five pressing challenges modern moms face:

1. Screen Time Everywhere

Screens are woven into almost every part of life—schools, restaurants, waiting rooms, even the back of a gas pump. Science keeps showing us the negative effects too much screen time can have on a child’s development and wellbeing, but avoiding it feels nearly impossible.

One summer when my kids were much younger, I tried to only take them to restaurants that didn’t have TVs. Needless to say, our options were very limited. It highlighted the tension many moms face—setting and holding boundaries in a world that constantly pushes against them.

2. The Reality of Gun Violence and School Shootings

This is the one that keeps so many of us (parents and kids) up at night. In the U.S., our kids are growing up with active shooter drills as a routine part of their school experience. Yet while these drills are becoming increasingly normalized, conversations about them lag behind. Too often, kids are left to manage their feelings alone—or hold everything in until they get home.

Moms today carry the double weight of their own fear and the responsibility of helping their children feel safe in an unsafe reality.

3. The Pressure of Convenience

Modern life moves fast—same-day delivery, instant groceries, drive-through everything. It’s all designed for ease. But behind the “ease” is a cost: constant distraction, multitasking, and a false sense of urgency. Instead of slowing down, convenience speeds us up, pulling life into an unnatural pace.

For moms, this often means feeling like we’re constantly behind—even when we’re not.

4. The Cost of Living

Groceries, childcare, housing, healthcare—the cost of everything is rising, and moms feel it deeply. Providing for a family today often requires dual incomes, but with that comes the mental load of juggling both outside work and home responsibilities.

There’s a quiet grief here too: the dream of a slower, more aligned life can feel out of reach for many families.

5. Carrying It All in Silence

Maybe the biggest challenge of all: moms are often expected to carry these fears, pressures, and decisions alone. To “make it work,” to stay grateful, to keep smiling. But the truth is, none of these challenges are meant to be held in isolation.

We’re not weak for finding it heavy—it is heavy. And talking about it, naming it, is one of the ways we lighten the load.

Naming the Truth

Motherhood today requires a kind of resilience that can’t be underestimated. If you’ve felt stretched thin, anxious, or even guilty for not keeping up—it isn’t you. It’s the world we’re raising kids in.

You are stronger than you realize. Naming these challenges doesn’t make you less capable—it makes you more human. And in that humanity, we can find connection, support, and even joy. You don’t have to do it all alone, and you don’t have to carry the weight in silence. Every small step you take to care for yourself, set boundaries, or speak your truth is a ripple of strength for your children and your family.

In the mess and the magic of modern motherhood, there is also power, resilience, and hope.

With love and solidarity,
